Putting the Paws in the Water

Last week I wrote about how my humans insisted on training me how to swim.  Well, this week I actually had to get my paws wet.  This was a problem, friends.  I don't mind water on my paws per se, but getting my paws wet meant I actually had to *gulp* get into the pool.  Let me tell you, my eyes were bugging and my Frenchie honk was loud.  But I did it, for my fans.

First, my human put me on the steps.  I did not like this one bit, swim vest and all!

As you can tell from the photo above, I was looking for a way to make a quick exit.  Unfortunately, I forgot that my swim vest had handles which made it very easy for my humans and their ape-like thumbs to grab hold of me and prevent an escape.  Touché.  Then it happened.  My human PUT MY WHOLE BODY INTO THE WATER.  My. Whole. Body.

In case you couldn't tell from the shot above, my eyes were bulging out of my head.  Here's a close up for your viewing pleasure:

I was not happy.  And neither was my human after I dug my claws into his arms.  But after my human held me in the water for a little while, I calmed down.  I realized that the pool wasn't so terrible, and it actually felt good on such a hot day.  Once my limbs were no longer stiff with fear, I played in the water for a little bit with my human.  I even tried the noodle!

Let's not kid ourselves, I am no Olympic swimmer yet, but I am making progress.  Maybe teaching me how to swim is not such a bad idea (don't tell my humans I said that).  Were you ever afraid to try something new?

  1. Good job! We were not fans of water either...and that's bad for a Retriever! But we're getting used to it and it is nice on a hot day...and good exercise too!

    1. Thank you for the encouragement! I am NOT a fan of swimming, but I am trying really hard. You're right - it is great exercise, and a good way to burn some energy! Hopefully next week I actually "swim"! Thanks for the visit!

  8. Yay, nice job on the water introduction! Our pups both love water, and Missy had an instant connection with it. It took her brother Buzz quite a bit longer to enjoy it...once we threw his favorite frisbee into the pool, he couldn't resist the temptation and in he went ;-) Motivation matters!

    1. Thanks! We are working on it slow and steady. We may "steal" your idea and try the motivation attempt. Although, if they threw a treat in the water I would probably jump in, grab it, and sink while eating LoL!
